More Frequent Oil Changes Needed, GM Tells 778,956 Car Owners

General Motors is notifying owners of almost 779,000 vehicles that their vehicles may need oil changes more frequently than their onboard oil monitoring systems are telling them.

The company is asking owners of 2010-12 Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and Buick Lacrosse and Regal models with 2.4-liter LAF and LEA four-cylinder engines to take those vehicles back to the dealerships to have the onboard oil monitoring system reprogrammed.

The service will be completed at no charge to the vehicle owner through February 28, 2015.

GM issued the warning after noting high warranty claims on several models with four cylinder engines. Dealerships will recalibrate the oil-life monitor to use shorter oil change intervals, according to Automotive News.

The recommended oil change interval provided by the monitor depends on how the vehicle is driven and the environment in which it is driven.
